Abstract Title: Spatial-temporal variability of meteorological drought over Mexico
Abstract: Based on gridded monthly precipitation data for the last 100-years, the spatial structure of significant summer droughts are documented. The most severe droughts over Mexico region are characterized by a dipole north-south. Low frequency variations in precipitation are examined to identify potential forcing mechanisms. Severe multiannual drought over Mexico region have been related to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). It is found that easterly wave activity may be the process through which sea surface temperature anomalies, associated with the AMO may reflect as variation in long term precipitation over Mexico.
